ELEGANT MAPPIN & WEBB ART DECO CASED SOLID STERLING SILVER 3 PIECE CONDIMENT CRUET SET ONE MUSTARD POT & SPOON – ONE PEPPER POT – ONE OPEN SALT & SPOON – BLUE GLASS LINERS – FITTED MAPPIN & WEBB MARKED PRESENTATION CASE – HIGH QUALITY. ROYAL SILVERSMITHS MAPPIN & WEBB. GEORGE V ERA – HALLMARKED BIRMINGHAM 1931 – GOOD CONDITION – GREAT GIFT! This is an elegant, cased Art Deco era solid sterling silver three piece condiment set, with matching spoons, the main pieces being in a lovely geometric six sided design – please see the photos. Rafted by the world famous royal silversmiths, Mappin & Webb, at the height of the Art Deco era, in the reign of George V, hallmarked for Birmingham 1931. The super thing about this set, apart from its lovely condition, is that all the pieces match exactly. Often, the spoons at least are from different eras and makers. The set consists of one mustard pot and spoon, one open salt and spoon and one pepper pot. Both the mustard pot and open salt have a fitted, six sided, blue glass liner. As you would expect from Mappin & Webb, the craftsmanship and quality is clear. And, as an added bonus, the set comes in its original marked Mappin & Webb fitted presentation case, also in really lovely condition. And remember, collecting silver is a fascinating hobby and a good investment. As a welcome distraction in these troubled days, why not start your own collection of antique silver? It need not be expensive and you will have something to value and pass on when better times return. Last year I obtained my own hallmark at the London Assay Office. If you have any questions about antique silver, please feel free to contact me and I will try my best to answer your queries. Please note I do not do valuations. The name of Mappin & Webb is synonymous with quality. It was formed in 1864 and has had a long relationship with royalty. This began in the late 19th century – in 1897 Queen Victoria granted a royal warrant as silversmiths. Mappin & Webb has maintained this position for the five subsequent monarchs and today holds a Royal Warrant as Silversmiths to Queen Elizabeth and to HRH the Prince of Wales. Furthermore, in 2012, the firms master craftsman was appointed to the position of Crown Jeweller. The mustard pot is about 5.5cm in height to the tip of the finial the weight of the silver is 25g. The salt is 3.5cm in height and weighs 13.5g in silver alone. The pepper pot is 7cm in height to the tip of the finial and weighs 17.7g. The mustard spoon is 6.5cm in length and 3.6g. The salt spoon is 5.6cm and 3g. So, for all five pieces, there is a solid silver weight of just under 63g in total. Everything is in good condition overall, both the silver and the box, especially considering the set is 89 years old, just the usual signs of wear commensurate with age and use. The only point to note is that the blue glass liner for the salt has been repaired. It appears to have been cracked into two pieces. I have taken a separate photo of it. As it is the original liner, and fitted, I have left it in as it would be difficult to replace. This is reflected in the price. It seems to be very firmly mended but it would be advisable to be careful on removal. I have put it in lightly so it can come out easily, just do it gently. It would be better not to push it right down, it sits in the silver fine anyway and the repair is not noticeable when it is in the salt. Any dark marks, etc are reflections or bits of age related patina. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING. Whilst you are here, why not have a look at our other lovely solid silver items?
