Antique Sterling Silver & Cut Glass Crystal Cruet Set and Stand. By Henry Wilkinson & Co, Chester 1846. Imposing set in very good condition – this would grace a fine dining table. An early Victorian Cruet Stand with original cut glass crystal bottles. The stand has a high silver lattice gallery, wooden base, tall silver handle (and silver retaining nut) with silver bottle separator. Mustard Pot with hinged Silver Cover, Pepper Pot with pull off pierced Silver Cover & Collar. Four Cut Glass Crystal Bottles complete with stoppers – these could be used for a variety of oils, vinegars or sauces. One stopper has a Silver Gilt Spoon attached, Pepper Pot neck is angled to facilitate shaking. The Lion Passant – the mark for English Sterling Silver. The Crown – town mark for Sheffield. The letter’ C and Crown’ being the date letter and symbol for 1846. The Maker’s Mark’ H W & Co’ for Henry Wilkinson & Sons. These marks can be seen on the mustard pot, the silver gilt spoon & stopper, the bottle separator, the retaining nut and the high gallery. Overall in good condition. There has been a little damage over the years. Two of the Cut Glass Crystal Bottles have nibbles – to the lip of one and the skirt of another, also one of the stoppers – see photos. W e mention these for sake of accuracy as they do not affect the integrity of the set in any way – they are old and smooth to the touch. We think that most of the Cut Glass Crystal Bottles are original, however it may be that some of the bottles have been replaced over the years. Nevertheless they still very much look the part and all fit snugly into the stand and again mentioned purely for the sake of accuracy. The pull off Sterling Silver cover and collar to the pepper pot both have some dings and surface marks – all totally consistent with age, use and polishing. The tall Sterling Silver handle has an old repair – strong and solid – only really noticeable at close quarters! Otherwise, this extraordinary old item is in very good condition – it has been in one family for generations and it is 170 years old!! 240 mm x 160 mm. (approx 9 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches). Weight: approx 1.5 Kg in total. Approx 400 grams of SterlingSilver.
