Solid silver Set of four salts, with spoons, cased. Goldsmiths & Silversmiths
Elegant set of four Victorian salts with matching spoons in dark brown/burgundy case. Salts are hallmarked for Sheffield (crown), sterling (lion), year’w’ (1889) makers mark W. L into a shield Goldsmiths and Silversmiths. The initials refer to the makers William Gibson & John Lawrence Langman. Salt weights, combined, approx. 45mm wide (including ball feet) and 22mm high. Spoon weights, combined, approx 12.2g Lengths approx. The salts and the spoon bowls/cups are gilded inside. 1The makers mark (with dot between initials) on the salt bowls was registered in Birmingham but appears here on Sheffield assayed pieces where the registered makers marks did not have the dot. 2 The salts are all dated year’w’ (1889), the last year in which Queen Victoria’s head appeared as a mark on sterling silver in most cities, except Sheffield where her head appeared on 1890 dated silver as’x’. These salts do not have her head stamped on the bases. The case hinge is in good order. The catch and button clip smartly though there is some lateral movement of a few mm if you apply pressure in opposite directions. The interior satin (below the salts) has some stains/chafe marks from the silver and the retaining cords for the spoons have snapped. The case lid has a slight distortion/warp (pictured) on both sides which is visible as a slight gap. It does not interfere with the opening or functionality of the case. One spoon has no hallmarks and differs slightly in design. Listed as white metal. Item is insured, tracked and signed for. The item “Solid silver Set of four salts, with spoons, cased.
