Jens Quistgaard Dansk Des Denmark Ihq'chessmen' Lg Teak Salt Shaker/pepper MILL
JENS QUISTGAARD DANSK DESIGNS DENMARK IHQ SIGNED’CHESSMEN’ LARGE LATHE TURNED TEAK COMBINATION SALT SHAKER/PEPPER MILL. Vintage Scandinavian/Danish Modern teak pepper mills and woodenware. 3 ½” Width (body) x 4″ Width (top) x 7 Height. In absolutely gorgeous, very well-preserved shape and in nearly originally constituted condition. This classic vintage Jens Quistgaard design for Dansk Designs Denmark IHQ, is from the famous and coveted’chessmen’ series of combination salt shakers and pepper mills that became wildly popular in the mid 1950’s to early 1960’s. This particular Jens Quistgaard Modernist design, appears to have significant Atomic influences from the 1950’s, with a flying saucer/alien spaceship convex form, that rests upon a smooth, lathe-turned, fluted ascending teak base. A fill cap, where unground peppercorn is loaded into the body of the teak wood pepper mill, amounts to the glass cockpit of a flying saucer and immediately invokes the mid-20th century universal fascination with the unknown, outer space and aliens visiting us in space craft from other worlds. The teak is nearly unblemished, with only one small and slight nick found on the lower body. The teak isn’t plagued with flea-bites or unsightly stains. In 100% overall vintage condition, it remains untouched and undisturbed. With supple tropical teak surfaces and naturally aged wood patina, anyone would realize this piece was obviously and clearly cared for by its previous owners and kept out of harm’s way. It seems to have been kept moist with properly applied teak oil and not allowed to dry out and fracture. It has nice, clean and sharp edges and with the form and classic Danish Modern lines that the internationally famous Danish Modernist designer Jens Quistgaard cut his teeth with. Absolutely beautiful and in absolutely wonderful condition. Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.
