Antique Silver Trencher Salts Made by THOMAS HARPER (18th Century). Please scroll down for photographs below. A handsome set of four antique sterling silver trencher salts in the rectangular form popular at the start of the 18th century but actually dating to 1780. Traces of the original gilt interior. Total weight 220 grams, 7 troy ounces. Base 7.5 x 6 cms. Top 6 x 4.5 cms. Biography: Thomas Harper I, probably born in Bristol circa 1735-40. No record of apprenticeship or freedom, nor evidence of working in London until much later. Harper emigrated to America circa 1764 and opened a working jeweller and goldsmith shop in Broad St Charleston, South Carolina. Married Elizabeth Edwards 1776. Sailed from Georgetown to Eustacious (Dutch West Indies) when loyalist trouble broke out, returning to Charlestown after its capture by the British. First mark entered as smallworker 1790. Died in 1832 when his business was taken over by Acklam at 139 Strand. Harper played a prominent role in the Masonic Lodge throughout his life and a number of his Masonic jewels are in the Library and Museum at Freemasons Hall, Great Queen St. Condition: These beautiful antique silver salts are in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Traces of the original gilt to the bowls. Each is stamped with a full set of clear English silver hallmarks. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
