Antique Novelty Silver Pepperette / Cruet, London 1878. Wonderful silver pepper shaker in the form of a man standing on a platform. The figure depicted is Jorrocks, a character created by Victorian author R. Robert Smith Surtees, English novelist of the chase and the creator of Mr. One of the great comic characters of English literature, a Cockney grocer. Who is as blunt as John Bull and entirely given over to fox hunting. Here Jorrocks is depicted in his full hunting regalia deep in animated discussion. The topic of discussion is apparently hunting, hence the inscription “On’unting”. Jorracks is finely detailed in heavy cast silver with perforated head. The top half of the head unscrews to facilitate filling with pepper. The figure is removable from the platform so that it can be used as a pepperette. The platform itself has a compartment with hinged lid to each end. Fully hallmarked to a number of places for John Septimus Beresford, London 1878. Further stamped with registration mark to the tail of Jorrocks’s jacket. A rare piece of novelty silver. Good antique condition with some wear. Minor dings and surface wear throughout. Some hallmarks are partially rubbed. However, if you prefer to pay by bank/postal order, cash, or bank transfer then that is perfectly acceptable too.
